RECIPE: Chocolate Cake

I have always grown up loving chocolate cake, never vanilla, and this recipe is what my mom always made with me. A chocolate cake made with love from my family at home.

  • 2 cups of white sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • ½ a cup of vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.
  2. Butter a nine-inch baking pan.
  3. Stir together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a big bowl.
  4. Add your wet ingredients (eggs, milk, oil and vanilla) into the same bowl and mix thoroughly.
  5. Once mixed, add in boiling water and slowly mix.
  6. Pour mixture into the nine-inch buttered pan and place into the oven to bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until the cake is fully baked.

PROCESS: How to wash your hair

I never found a way to properly wash my hair and after multiple hair stylists telling me what is right and wrong, this is what has worked best for me.

  1. Step into the shower and find the right temperature of your water by turning the faucet left.
  2. Next, grab shampoo that best fits for you, open the cap, squirt a quarter-sized amount into your hand and rub your hands together. Then you want to fully wet your hair under the water, step aside and rub the shampoo thoroughly into the roots of your hair.
  3. After massaging the head for 1-2 minutes, rinse your hair making sure every bit of soap rinses out.
  4. Now, to properly get clean hair, repeat steps 2 and 3.
  5. After properly going through the first steps, grab your conditioner, open the cap and squirt another quarter-sized amount into your hand. Rub your hands together, but not too much, just enough to get product onto both hands.
  6. Next, rub the conditioner onto the ends of your hair and coat every strand possible. Let it sit for 3 to 5 minutes.
  7. Lastly, rinse the conditioner under the water, making sure to not leave any leftover product in your hair.

Why are the Northern Lights so cool to see from Kansas?

This is a hot topic right now because the Northern Lights are up north, not usually making it visible from Kansas. Right now, there is a geomagnetic storm, meaning that there is a “major disturbance of Earth’s magnetosphere that occurs when there is a very efficient exchange of energy from the solar wind into the space environment surrounding Earth” (Space Weather Prediction Center). On Tuesday, Nov. 11, the sky had a pink hue that was visible right here in Kansas. Sometimes this can be a once-in-a-lifetime sight, so if you have the chance again, run outside to see the beautiful sights that we may never see again.
